Answer for: to be answerable for (किसी गलत बात की जिम्मेदारी लेना)

Example -  If one makes mistake then one should be ready to answer for it.

 Ask after: to inquire about (किसी के बारे में पूछताछ करना)

Example - Rohit had to contact branch office to ask after the delay in the process.

Attend on: to serve (सेवा करना)

Example -  We should not forget to attend on our grandparents in their old age.

 Back out: to choose not to do something agreed (किसी सहमत बात से पीछे हटना)

Example -   After his father had refused him, he backed out of picnic plan.

 Back up: to support (सहायता देना)

Example -   I couldn’t have solved this issue without your back up.

 Bear down: to press down heavily (दबाना या कुचलना)

Example -   The snow bore down on the roof. (बर्फ़बारी ने छत पर दबाव बनाया)

 Blow over: to pass without harming (बिना नुकसान पहुचाये गुजर जाना)

Example - My headache finally blew over.

 Bound for: going to a destination (किसी स्थान को जाता हुआ)

Example - This train is bound for Chennai.

 Break down (of machinery) : to stop working (कम करना बंद कर देना)

Example - Our car broke down on the way of Udaipur. (कार ने ख़राब होने के कारण काम करना बंद कर दिया)

 Break down: to lose control emotionally (रोने लगना)

Example - The old lady broke down when heard news of her son’s death.

 Break into: to enter illegally (जबरदस्ती घुसना)

Example - Last night, some thieves broke into our neighbor’s house.

 Break out: to start (of disease or war etc.) (अचानक फैलना)

Example - In Southern Jaipur, the swine flu has broken out.

 Break up (of relationship) : to end/separate (अलग हो जाना)

Example - Suman and Sohan broke up after 5 year’s long relationship.

 Bring about: to cause to happen (होने का कारण होना)

Example - This injury on my hand brought about skin infection to my whole body. (इन्फेक्शन होने का कारण हाथ पर हुई चोट हैं)

 Bring down: to reduce (कम करना)

Example - Carelessness in studies brings down the performance of student in exam.

 Bring up: to raise, to rear (पालन पोषण करना)

Example - After My parent’s death in an accident, I was brought up by my grandparents.

 Call for: to demand (मांग करना)

Example - The Company workers called for extra wages.

 Call off: to cancel (रद्द कर देना)

Example - Due to heavy rainfall, we had to call off our picnic plan.

 Call on: to pay a visit (जाकर मुलाकात करना)

Example - The Rural development minister calls onrural areas every month.

 Call up: to recall (याद करना)

Example - Although Tina is an atheist, she calls up God when in trouble.

 Carry on: to continue (जारी रखना)

Example - After rain had stopped, we carried on our party on roof.

 Carry out: to execute (किसी कार्य को पूरा करना)

Example - The Supervisor carried out all the instructions carefully given by Manager.

 Catch up (with): to stop being behind (बराबरी पर आ जाना)

Example - Though Rajan took admission in midsession, he caught up with his classmates in final exams.

 Clear someone of: to free from blame (आरोप मुक्त करना)

Example - The Court has cleared him of all the charges leveled against him.

 Come about: to happen (घटित होना)

Example - What came about last night?  I had heard something.

 Come across: to meet by chance (अचानक मुलाकात होना)

Example - Yesterday, while wandering in the market, I came across my old school friend.

Come off : to be successful (सफल होना)

Example - After toiling hard, Ramesh has finally come off in his IAS exam.

 Cordon off : to seal a place (किसी स्थान की घेराबंदी करना)

Example - The Police cordoned off the area, where the accident took place.

 Count on : to depend on, to rely on (विश्वास करना या निर्भर रहना)

Example -  Drishti always counts on her mother for her personal work as she is too lazy. (निर्भर रहती हैं)

Example - Nowadays, it’s not safe to count on strangers. (विश्वाश करना)

 Cut out for : to be suitable for (किसी कार्य के लिए उपयुक्त होना)

Example -  The Candidate who will be cut out for the post,  will be recruited by our HR manager.

 Deal in : to have business of (किसी चीज का व्यापर करना)

Example -  Mr. Sinha deals in garment. (कपड़ो का व्यापर करते हैं)

 Deal out : to distribute (वितरित करना)

Example -  Our teacher dealt out the exam sheet.

Deal with : to treat with a person (किसी से व्यव्हार करना)

Egg on : to motivate (प्रेरित करना)

 Fall for : fall in love with (आकर्षित होना)

Example -  Jack fell for Jill in early school days.

 Feel like : to be excited to do something (किसी काम को करने का इच्छुक होना)

 Figure out : to understand (समझ पाना)

 Fizzle out : to weaken gradually (क्रमश कमजोर पड़ना)

Example -  We were all excited about festivals in childhood, but the excitement has frizzled out. (त्योहारों का उत्साह धीरे धीरे कम हो गया हैं)

 Gain on : to come close to (प्रतियोगिता में नजदीक होना)

Example - Although Rita was an average student in beginning, she gained on topper of class in annual exams.

 Get along (with someone) : to have a friendly relationship (दोस्ताना व्यव्हार होना)

Example - Deepika gets along well with Ranvir.

Get away with : to do something illegal without being punished (गलत कम करके बिना सजा के बच के निकल जाना)

Example - Though Rohan had commited crime, he got away with this.

Get over : to have control on (किसी पर काबू होना)

Example - Parents should be able to get over their children.

 Get on : to make progress (प्रगति करना)

Example - Everyone can get on, if he/she works hard.

 Get rid of : to leave, to dispose of, to throw away (छुटकारा पाना)

Example - We were so irritated with the children, so we sent them out to play and got rid of disturbance.

Get through with : to complete a task (किसी कार्य को पूरा करना)

Example - The marketing team has got through with its assignment.

 Give away : to reveal the secret (रहस्य उजागर करना)

Example - My friends were planning a surprise birthday  party but one of them was so excited that he gave away the plan.

 Give in : to surrender (समर्पण करना)

Example -  However, The king had struggled hard but at the end, he had to give in.

 Give up : abandon (त्याग देना)

Example - After watching the height of the mountain, we gave up our plan of climbing.

 Go about : to move from place to place (एक जगह से दूसरी जगह जाना)

Example - Government employees go about in town and villages for the social campaign.

Go along with : to agree (सहमत होना)

Example -  My boss went along with me on the idea regarding the upcoming project.

Goes by : to work accordingly (नियमानुसार कार्य करना)

Example - Suman is a very sincere employee; she always goes by company’s policies.

 Go down in history : to get admitted in history (इतिहास में नाम दर्ज होना)

Example - Gandhiji struggled hard for freedom of India so his name went down in history.

 Go on : to continue doing something (किसी कार्य को जारी रखना)

Go through : To read, to pass through a time (किसी दौर से गुजरना/ पढना)

Example -  You are advised to go through this chapter in order to find solution of your problem. (पढना)

Example - These days, Real estate business is going through inflation. (मंदी के दौर से गुजर रहा हैं)

 Go with : to match (मेल खाना)

Example - This scarf is going with my new dress which I bought last week.

 Hear of : to get the news about (किसी के बारे में सूचना मिलना)

Example - I was shocked when heard of his fatal accident. (दुर्घटना के बारे में सूचना मिलना)

 Hit out : to attack verbally (आलोचना करना)

Example - Some persons are in the habit of hitting outothers.

Hold back : to control expression (व्यक्त करने से रुकना)

Example - Sunita was about to say something, but suddenly she held back. (बोलते बोलते रुक गयी)

Hold on : to keep something in a position

Example - In spite of her aching shoulders, Robin held onthe rope.(कंधे में दर्द के बावजूद रस्सी को पकडे रखा)

Jump at : to reach conclusion in a hurry (जल्दबाजी में किसी निष्कर्ष पर पहुचना)

Example - John has no passions, he always jumps at. (धैर्य नही होने के कारण जल्दी में निष्कर्ष पर पहुच जाता हैं)

Keep away : to maintain distance (दूरी बनाये रखना)

Example - Childern were instructed to keep away from garbage while playing in the street. (कचरे से दूर रहने के लिए कहा गया)

Keep from : to abstain from (बुरी संगत से दूर रहना)

Example - We should keep from bad company.

Keep up: to maintain in good condition/ to continue doing something (अच्छी स्थिति में रखना/ किसी कार्य को जारी रखना)

Example - Sameer loves his bike, so he keeps it up. (अच्छी स्थिति में रखता हैं)

Example - You are doing well in game, keep it up. (जारी रखो)

Knock down : to thrust someone to the ground (धक्का मार के गिरा देना)

Example - In the game of Kabbadi, Sushil knocked down his opponent.

Lay down : to give up arms (हथियार डाल देना)

Example - Though soldiers struggled hard in the battle, but in end they had to lay down.

Lay off : to dismiss/ to fire (छटनी करना/ नौकरी से निकालना)

Example - In the time of recession, Companies usually lay off its employees.

Lie behind : to be the real reason (वास्तविक कारण होना)

Example -  We need to explore what lies behind the increasing weight problem. (वजन बढ़ने के पीछे वास्तविक कारण क्या हैं)

Live by : to earn livelihood/ to follow (कोई काम करके गुजर बसर करना/ अनुसरण करना)

Example - My uncle lives by furniture work.(फर्नीचर का काम करके गुजर बसर करते हैं)

Example - We should live by traffic rules while on road. (यातायात के नियमो का अनुसरण करना चाहिए)

Live off : to live on particular food (किसी खास भोजन पर रहना)

Example - Some monks live off fruits and vegetables only. (सिर्फ फल और सब्जिया ही खाते हैं)

Live through : to survive in difficulty (किसी अप्रिय अनुभव को झेलना)

Example -  Nowadays, My family is living throughinsolvency. (कंगाली में रह रहे हैं)

Live up to : to reach an expected standard (उम्मीद के अनुसार होना)

Example - This project should have lived up to, but unfortunately it is not. (उम्मीद के अनुसार होना चाहिए था)

Look about/for : to search (खोजना)

Example - I am looking about my spectacles.

Example - My mother has looked for the shirt, but didn’t find it.

Look after : to take care of something or someone (देख भाल करना)

Example - We should look after our grandparents in their old age.

Look down on /upon : to regard as inferior (नीची निगाह से देखना / किसी को कम आंकना)

Example -  He looks down on everyone, who doesn’t belong to his community.

Look forward to : to anticipate pleasantly (उत्सुकता से प्रतीक्षा करना)

Example -  As Minal has performed well in interview, she is looking forward to positive response from company.

Look into : to investigate (जाँच करना- खोजबीन के सन्दर्भ में)

Example - The police are looking into case honestly.

Look out for : to try to find (खोजने या समझने की कोशिश करना)

Example -  You need to look out for why he declined your proposal.

Look over : to examine (जांच करना)

Example - Teachers look over answer sheet carefully before submitting to exam cell.

Make do with : to manage (काम चलाना)

Example -  There was no juice so I had to make do with soft drink which I generally avoid.

Make for : to result in/ to cause (किसी बात में सहायक होना)

Example - The low quality of service made for failure of project. (गुणवत्ता में कमी, प्रोजेक्ट के असफल होने का कारण बनी)

Make out : to manage to understand (किसी व्यक्ति या चीज को समझना)

Example -  Manager is trying to make out the concept of new project proposed by me.

Make the most of : to get maximum (पूरा पूरा लाभ उठाना)

Example - The smart person always makes the most ofevery situation that comes his way.

Occur to : to understand (समझ में आना)

Example - Physics never occurs to me, however I try a lot to understand it.

Part with : to leave/ abandon (बिछड़ना / त्यागना वस्तु के सन्दर्भ में )

Example -  You need to part with your some luggage as it is creating extra load in car.

Part from : leave or separate form someone (किसी व्यक्ति से अलग होना या बिछड़ना)

Example -   Reena parted from her boyfriend after five year’s long relationship.

Pull  off : to succeed in doing something difficult (किसी मुश्किल काम को करने में सफल होना)

Example -  It was almost impossible to conveyance my father for my Udaipur trip but finally we have   pulled off.

Pull up : to criticize (आलोचना करना)

Example -  My aunt is in the habit of pulling up others without any reason.

Put across : to communicate successfully (समझोता आदि के लिए बातचीत करना)

Example - Pakistan and China put across on the issue of their new upcoming project.

Put aside : to save for future or to avoid (भविष्य के लिए बचाना या उपेक्षा करना)

Example - It is always advised to put aside some money by our parents. (भविष्य के लिए बचाना)

Example - Rohan put aside all the bottlenecks while preparing for IAS exam. (नजरंदाज किया)

Put up with : to tolerate (सहन करना)

Example -  We should never put up with wrong doings of unsocial elements.

Put forth : to request (निवेदन करना)

Example - We had to put forth to authority to consider our application first.

Put together : to put someone in trouble or to create or construct (किसी को परेशानी में डालना/ बनाना)

Example - Reena always puts together me with her pranks.  (परेशानी में डाल देती हैं)

Example - The manager has put together separate team for every task. (मैनेजर ने सभी कार्य के लिए अलग टीम बनायीं हैं)

Put down : to suppress or criticize (दमन करना या आलोचना करना)

Example - The mettle king put down his enemy bravely. (शत्रुओ का दमन किया)

Put off : to postpone (स्थगित करना)

Example - Karan had to put off his holiday trip due to busy schedule of office.

Put on : to wear clothes/ gain weight (कपडे पहनना या वजन का बढ़ना)

Put through : to make someone feel something unpleasant (किसी को परेशानी में डालना)

Run down : to criticize / to decline (आलोचना करना / कमजोर पड़ना)

Example - Don’t run down your brother in public, it will definitely annoy him. (आलोचना मत करो)

Example - Due to low quality of service, the rating of this product has run down. (रेटिंग कम हो गयी हैं)

Run into (problem) : to face (समस्या में पड जाना)

Example - I just wanted to help him, but I didn’t know I would run into this pathetic situation.

Run into : to meet by chance (अचानक मुलाकात होना)

Example - It was really unexpected to run into my old college friend in market.

Run over : to crush by a vehicle (वाहन से कुचलना)

Example - Yesterday, My grandmother was run over by a car in street.

Set about : to initiate effort (प्रयास प्रारंभ करना)

Example - Vikas is very sincere for his career, he set abouthis IAS exam in graduation period.

Set up : to establish (स्थापित करना)

Example - Coal India has set up one of its branches in Dhanbad.

Sit around/about : to spend time without any activity (खाली बैठना)

Example - My brother is so careless. He neither studies nor works.  He just sits around.

Smile on : to bless (भाग्य का किसी पर प्रसन्न होना)

Example - Destiny has smiled on Tanmay as he has cracked exam without preparing for it.


See off - To take leave of

Example- I went to the station to see off my friends.


Stand by - To remain loyal/ to be ready

Example- I will stand by you through thick and thin.


Taken aback- To be surprised

Example- I was taken aback by his audacity.


Take after -  To resemble a close, older relative

Example- He has taken after his father.


Take over -  To take responsibility for or control of

 Example- A new secretary has taken over the key post.


Turn down - To refuse or reject

Example- He turned down my offer.


Turn out (to be) - To prove to be

Example- He turned out to be a crook.


Wear off - To lose effect Soon 

Example-  The polish started wearing off .


Weigh down -
To make anxious, to burden

 Example- Men were weighed down with added responsibilities.
