🔘How to solve a 'para jumble/jumbled sentences' in no time

1) Take a quick overview of all the given sentences and analyze the theme

2) Note the transition wordskeywords which help establish link between the sentences.

⚫If a sentence starts with a ‘name’ of a person, then there is high chance of that sentence becoming the first sentence of the paragraph.

⚫If a sentence starts with pronouns other than 'I and You' , then that sentence can not be the first sentence of the paragraph

⚫ The sentences starting with the words "These,  those, that, however, then" can not  be the first sentence of the paragraph

⚫ If an article ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’ introduces a sentence. Then the chances of that sentence to be the 1st in the arrangement is more.

⚫ If the given set of sentences consists of simple, compound and complex sentences they are arranged in the following order
First - simple sentence
Second - Compound sentence
Third - Complex sentence

Simple sentence – a sentence that consists of basic elements like a subject, a verb and a completed thought
For example - Meera visited the place.

Compound sentence – a sentence that consists of  two independent clauses connected to one another with a conjunction
For example -
Meera visited the place, but didn't like it much.

Complex sentence – a sentence that consists of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses connected to it

For example - Seeing the popularity, Meera visited the place but she didn't like it much.

If a sentence starts with the words Hence, Finally or Therefore then that sentence comes last in the arrangement.

🔷Now let's try to solve the following jumbled sentences.

1) Directions: Rearrange the given five sentences A, B, C, D  in the paragraph sequence so as to form a meaningful paragraph and then answer the questions given below them.

A.  Boys are encouraged to be tough and outgoing,  girls are encouraged to be homebound and shy.

B. As soon as a child is born,  families and society begin the process of gendering.

C. All these differences are gender differences and they are created by society.

 D. The birth of the son is celebrated,  the birth of a daughter is filled with pain

A) ADCB
B) BCAD
C) BDAC
D) CABD

SOLUTION :

After taking a quick overview of all the 4 sentences we get to know that the theme is 'gender inequality'.
Now we have to identify first sentence among the given sentences.
While taking the overview we noted that there is a sequence as follows-
"As soon as a child is born, birth of the son is celebrated.. "  so It is clearly visible that these two sentences will be the first two sentences.
Now if we talk about sentence C, we can say that it will be the last sentence of the passage as it mentions 'all these differences', it means all the differences/inequalities have been mentioned before, hence sentence C will form the last sentence of the paragraph.
Hence, the correct sequence is BDAC

2) Directions: Rearrange the given five sentences A, B, C, D and E   in the paragraph sequence so as to form a meaningful paragraph and then answer the questions given below them.

A.  Among Rajputs, marriages with other caste male /female instigate  killings of the married couple and family.

B. Honour Killings are frequent,  mainly in the Indian State  of Punjab,  Rajasthan,  Haryana and Bihar.

C.  This is unique form of honour killing related to the militant culture of ethnic Rajputs,

D. who, despite the forces of modernization and the pressures of decolonization,  subscribe to the medieval views

 E. concerning the  'preservation'  of  perceived  'purity'  of their lineage.

A) ADCBE
B) BCADE
C) BACDE
D) CABED

SOLUTION :

After taking a quick overview of all the 5 sentences we get to know that the theme is 'honour killing'.
Now, our first task is to find out the first sentence of the paragraph.
If we take a closer look we will realize that sentences D, E, can't be the first sentence as  'D' starts with a relative pronoun (who),  in 'E' there is  mention of possessive adjective 'their'  which indicates that some things related to that, has already been mentioned.
Now,  if we take a close look at the sentences A, B, C we realize that 'B' should be the first sentence as it introduces 'honour killing' while the sentence A talks about a different type of honour killing among Rajputs and the sentence C defines this unique honour killing among Rajputs. 'Who' (relative pronoun) in the sentence D, has been used for 'Rajputs' mentioned in sentence C.
Hence the correct sequence would be
BACDE
