🔘Question tag is a very important topic that is asked in SSC and bank exams every year frequently. There are some important rules which are asked frequently in SSC and bank exams. EnglishKendra team has compiled those in this post to save your time.

💠Rules for making question tag :-
1) The sentence and the question tag must be in the same tense.
2) If the sentence is positive, the question tag must be negative and vice versa.
3)Pronoun is used in the question tag.
4) Contracted form of "helping verb and not" is used (didn't, haven't etc) ,for a negative question tag.There is no Contracted form of am not ,so aren't is used in the question tag. 

💠SOME IMPORTANT RULES (WITH QUESTIONS)  FROM QUESTION TAG :

1) Everyone has gone there,hasn't he?❌
Everyone has gone there,haven't they?✔️

2) No one in the class knows English, does he?❌
No one in the class knows English, do they?✔️
◼️RULE 1 - Each,everyone, everybody, no one,nobody, none are considered singular, so they take singular verb/pronoun/adjective/ with them but their question tags take plural verb and plural pronoun .



3) This is my notebook, isn't this?❌
This is my notebook, isn't it?✔️

◼️RULE 2- If a statement has an introductory subject,then the subject of the question tag becomes as follows 

Subject of        Subject of  tag
statement   

This/That/It                     It
These/Those                 They
One                                 one
There                             

Examples- 
There were no good restaurants in the town,were there?✔️
There is no food,is there?✔️

4) The committee has taken it's decision, haven't they?❌
The committee has taken it's decision, hasn't  it?✔️

The committee are divided in their opinion, isn't it?❌
The committee are divided in their opinion,aren't they?✔️


◼️RULE 3- Collective noun takes singular verb/pronoun in the question tag when it shows unanimity.But if we talk about individual members of the collective noun or if it does not show unanimity, it takes plural verb/pronoun in the question tag. 

One more example 
The audience have taken their seats,haven't they?✔️
(Shows individuality,so plural)

5) Sara hardly does any work,doesn't she?❌
Sara hardly does any work,does she?✔️

◼️RULE 4- Some words are negative in meaning.ex- hardly,scarcely,seldom,rarely,barely etc.Hence they take positive question tag after them.


6) Let's go to the party,do we?❌
Let's go to the party,shall we?✔️

◼️RULE 5 - If the sentence starts with 'let us' ,the question tag used is as follows 

Statement with       subject of tag
Let

Let us                         shall we           
Let him/her               will you
Let them                    will you

Examples - 
Let her play,will you?✔️
Let them go ,will you?✔️

7) Go there ,don't you?❌
Go there ,won't you?✔️

◼️RULE 6- In imperative sentences with positive sense ,'will/won't you' is used in the question tag. 

8) Keep your mouth shut ,will you?❌
Keep your mouth shut ,won't you?❌
Keep your mouth shut ,can't you?✔️

◼️RULE 7- If the imperative sentence expresses annoyance or irritation then the question tag is 'can't you'.


9) Have some more sweets,would you?✔️

◼️RULE 8- If in an imperative sentence ,somebody is being offered something, 'would you' is used in the question tag.
