Ok now let's talk about direct-Indirect speech of imperative sentences


🔘DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH OF IMPERATIVE SENTENCES :
Let's take an example

1) Sonal said ,"Rohit ,please bring me that dress.

a) Sonal told Rohit to bring her that dress.
b)Sonal asked rohit to bring that dress.
c)Sonal requested rohit to bring her that dress.
d)Sonal wanted rohit to bring her that dress.

Solution: c

◾Rule - To make indirect speech of imperative sentences
a)verb in the reporting verb changes into command/order/beg/request/advise/forbid/suggest/propose/assure/ask/remind/agree/promise etc.
b) To/not to is used in place of inverted commas.It should be noted that when 'to' is used in place of inverted comma,the form of verb does not change.
c)Appropriate changes in tense ,pronouns,adverbs of time and place are made.

2) She said,"Let us go to the movie."

a)She advised that we should go to the movie.
b)She proposed that we should go to the movie.
c)She proposed that they go to the movie.
d)she said we should go to the movie.
Solution :b
RULE - If there is 'Let' in the reported speech,our first task is to identify whether it's a proposal,suggestion,request or order.Our second task is to use the verb accordingly.

If we take a close look at the question given above ,we will find that it's a proposal so the verb 'proposed' has been used in indirect speech.

⚫Let as a proposal/suggestion

5) I said to Ananya ,"Let us buy a new house."

a)I requested Ananya that we should buy a new house.
b)I suggested Ananya that we should buy a new house.
c)I told Ananya to buy a new house.
d)I told Ananya that we should buy a new house.

Solution : b
As we can see it's a suggestion.


⚫Let as a request

6) Akanksha said to the manager ,"Let me go home."

a)Akanksha requested the manager to let her go home.
b)Akanksha requested the manager  that she might be allowed  to go home.
c)Akanksha told the manager that she wants to go home.
d)Akanksha asked the manager that she wants to go home.

Solution: Both a and b are correct.Indirect speech can be made in two ways when there is 'let' in the reported speech and it shows a request.

⚫Let as an order

7) The manager said to his assistant ,"Let the customers in."

a)The manager told his assistant that the customers may be allowed to in.
b)The manager ordered his assistant that the customers may be allowed to in.
c)The manager ordered his assistant that the customers may be allowed to in.
d)The manager ordered his assistant to let the customers in.

Solution : d.
As we can see it shows an order so 'may be allowed ' can't be used.

⚫Let as 'don't care'

8) Shalini said ,"Let it rain I have to go."

a) Shalini said that she would go home anyhow.
b)Shalini said that no matter what she would go home.
c)Shalini persisted that she didn't care for the rain and she had to go.
d)Shalini persisted that let it rain she had to go.

Solution  : c
If 'let' in the reported speech shows 'don't care ' attitude ,we make indirect speech in the way as mentioned above.

9)Ananya said,"Congratulations my brother,you have won."

a)Ananya congratulated her brother that he had won.
b)Ananya congratulated her brother telling him that he won.
c)Ananya congratulated her brother telling him that he had won.
d)Ananya congratulated her brother telling him that he has won.

Solution: c

a)she thanked that she would never forget that kindness.
